On major liturgical feast days in the Venice of the Doges, it was customary for the religious services to be preceded by large parades through the city : the Andata in trionfo. These enormous processionals were an expression of the Venetians' pride in their politico-religious independence. The most elaborate and sumptuous music composed by Giovanni Gabrieli, organist at San Marco until his death in 1612, was in the main destined for these great ceremonial events which punctuated the religious and secular year.
