Venice the Serenissima, Venice the liberal… So welcoming to artists that it could be considered a Republic of the arts?

In the 1670s, two renowned composers and fans of the violin made their home in Venice. The influential Legrenzi reached the summit of his career in 1685 when, following in the footsteps of Monteverdi and Cavalli, he became maestro di capella at San Marco. As for Rosenmüller, escaping from Germany, he embued the city with a style rich in refined counterpoint and a rich melodic inventiveness. In 1677 Stradella, one of the greatest and most capricious composers of his time, also took refuge in Venice. Here is an orchestral programme rich in finesse, conceived by Manfredo Kraemer and based on great works which are visionary, sensitive and totally baroque.
