In the Shadow of Words

'The shadow of words' – this is how Mahmoud Darwish defined the metaphor. He thought that poetry was firstly music and that it was 'read as much by the ears as by the eyes'. For him, recitation became a necessary extension of the act of writing. The Trio Joubran accompanied him on many occasions throughout Europe and the Arab world, and after his death, their last project became a homage… The Joubran family in Palestine has lived, loved, played and manufactured the oud for over four generations. Inheriting this passion combined with technical knowledge, the three brothers possess a unique mastery of the instrument; between them exists a harmony and synchronicity which is their trademark. Youssef Hbeisch enriches the trio with percussion which merges seamlessly with the music. A moment of true beauty.
