The art of the soloist in medieval latin music (9^th-13^th Centuries) - Katarina Livljanic

This course for singers and instrumentalists will involve work with the latin liturgical (plain-chant, tropes, sequences) and operatic repertoire. The medieval repertoire is often orientated towards music for ensemble and considered less virtuosic than that of later periods. The aim is to show that the art of the soloist is one of the high points of the music of the Early Middle Ages and to discover its richness and variety, from a vocal and instrumental perspective. We will tackle the plain-chant repertoire for soloist, as well as polyphonic music for small groups. Instrumental accompaniment will also be studied in collaboration with the singers.

AREAS OF STUDY

• Discovery of a varied and rarely-performed repertoire with specialists from the ensembles Dialogos and Sequentia: complementary perspectives on plain-chant, latin opera and instrumental accompaniment. Techniques for memorisation.
• Solo and small ensemble work on performance, notation, modal and polyphonic improvisation.

TEACHING FEE

200 euros (teaching fee and lunches)
175 euros for participants of the European Baroque Academy (2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007).
Accommodation can be provided in Ambronay (bedrooms of 4-6 beds): 110 euros (night, evening meals and breakfast). Fore more details.
